A former FBI special agent has admitted to stealing nearly $1 million in cryptocurrency while working on sensitive federal investigations, exposing a remarkable breach of trust inside one of the United States' most important law enforcement agencies. According to court documents, the agent secretly accessed cryptocurrency wallets connected to ongoing investigations and transferred digital assets into wallets that he personally controlled over an extended period.

The individual reportedly worked in the FBI's Counterintelligence and Espionage Division, a position that gave him access to highly classified information and evidence collected during criminal investigations. Because of his role, he was able to obtain confidential recovery information, including seed phrases that allowed him to gain full access to cryptocurrency wallets associated with seized or investigated digital assets. Instead of protecting those funds, he allegedly used that access to transfer the assets into new wallets under his own control.

The unauthorized transfers occurred repeatedly over many months rather than as a single incident. By moving cryptocurrency in multiple transactions, the total value of the stolen assets eventually reached approximately one million dollars. Investigators believe the transfers continued until shortly before the case came to light.

The investigation took an unexpected turn when the former agent voluntarily contacted officials from the U.S. Department of Justice and requested a private meeting. During that conversation, he reportedly confessed to taking the cryptocurrency and described how the thefts had been carried out. His admission became a major turning point in the investigation and prompted authorities to begin collecting additional evidence to verify his statements.

Searches conducted at his residence uncovered important pieces of evidence. Investigators recovered a Trezor hardware wallet along with written copies of cryptocurrency recovery phrases. They also discovered cryptocurrency exchange accounts containing significant balances and traced large transfers from his personal wallets to decentralized cryptocurrency platforms. These findings helped investigators connect the digital transactions to the suspect and reconstruct the movement of the stolen assets.

Authorities also examined the contents of the suspect's mobile phone and found conversations with ChatGPT. The records showed that he had asked the artificial intelligence system for financial guidance, including how someone with one million dollars could invest the money to generate higher returns. He also requested information about relocating outside the United States, becoming a resident or citizen of a European Union country, traveling through Turkey, and preparing documents related to employment opportunities and living in Greece.

Investigators further discovered evidence that the suspect had been researching international travel for his family, including a planned trip to Portugal and the paperwork required for the journey. Although he insisted that the planned vacation was unrelated to the stolen cryptocurrency, investigators considered the information relevant because it demonstrated preparations for possible overseas travel after the thefts.

After reviewing the confession together with the financial records, cryptocurrency evidence, digital devices, and travel-related information, authorities concluded there was sufficient evidence to arrest the former FBI agent. The case has drawn widespread attention because it involves a trusted federal official accused of abusing privileged access for personal financial gain. It also highlights how digital evidence, blockchain transaction records, and conversations with artificial intelligence tools can all become part of a modern criminal investigation. The case serves as another reminder that cryptocurrencies leave permanent transaction records that investigators can analyze, making it increasingly difficult to conceal illicit financial activity over the long term.
